I am a Maine native and have always been involved in seeing the world through art. After formal training in diverse media, I pursued painting as my primary technique. I studied at the Portland School of Art, and in 1969, was a part of the pivotal breakaway from PSA with the establishment of Concept School of Art, where I studied and also taught. During these earlier Portland years, I maintained a studio for painting, and also created public installations, as well as being active in originating and participating in cooperative galleries. I was an early member in helping establish the UMVA, which is still functioning today. Many others, including Kathy Bradford and Don Voisine, were involved and pivotal participants in these early art endeavors, and we all remain good friends today as well. In the summer of 1970, I was the first recipient of the Marguerite Zorach Scholarship to the Skowhegan School. At the end of the session, an etching of mine was chosen as the first Skowhegan print to benefit the scholarship fund. I was encouraged to continue my painting studies by several artists who taught that year, specifically Ken Noland and Brice Marden, who each suggested moving to NYC, which I eventually did, after first spending a year at the Royal College of Art in London, attending on the Sir Robin Darwin Scholarship. After participating in a McDowell fellowship on my return, I then lived in NYC for much of the 1980s/90s, working and maintaining a studio. When I came back to Maine, it was to pursue building my own home on Matinicus Island, which I had begun constructing in 1986. Though this has been quite an adventure along the way, I have never lost my drive or the steady pursuit of making art…I continue to have a studio in Rockland, as well as the one I have built on Matinicus.
